# Role Model

JumpServer uses two role layers. A user can hold a system role and one or more
organization roles at the same time, and the effective permissions are the union
of those grants.

## System roles

System roles apply universally across all organizations in the platform. They
define permissions and access levels for the whole system, so changing a system
role affects every organization that uses the platform.

Typical use cases:

- Platform administration (all organizations and global settings)
- Cross-organization auditing
- A baseline self-service role that is combined with organization roles

## Organization roles

Organization roles are tailored to individual organizations. They are assigned
when a user is invited to join an organization and apply only within that
organization. Unlike system roles, organization roles are customizable and do
not grant access outside the organization they are bound to.

Typical use cases:

- Administering one organization's users, assets, and authorizations
- Auditing only one organization's sessions and logs
- Giving a user day-to-day access to authorized assets in one organization

## Default roles

| Role | Scope | Default capability |
| --------------------- | ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| System Admin | System | Highest system administrator; all functional permissions |
| System Auditor | System | Audits module across organizations |
| System Operator | System | General baseline role; intended to be combined with an organization role |
| Organization Admin | Organization | Console, Audits, and Workbench within the organization |
| Organization Auditor | Organization | Audits within the organization |
| Organization Operator | Organization | Workbench within the organization |

Note

The API and older releases may expose the internal names `SystemUser` and
`OrgUser` for the operator roles. Use the role names shown in the current UI.

## How assignments combine

1. Assign a **system role** on the user record.
2. Assign an **organization role** when inviting the user to an organization, or
when managing the user's organization membership.
3. The user's effective permissions are the union of the system-scope and
   organization-scope permissions.
4. Changing a system role affects all organizations. Changing an organization
   role affects only that organization.

A user with **System Operator** alone has a general baseline and should be
paired with an organization role such as **Organization Operator** to use
organization-scoped features. Likewise, **Organization Admin** is scoped to one
organization; platform-wide configuration requires **System Admin**.

## Built-in and custom roles

The default roles are built-in and protected: they cannot be edited or deleted.
To customize an organization role, clone the built-in role or create a new
organization role and grant the required permissions. System roles and
organization roles are managed separately in **System Settings > Roles**.
